Young Sherlock Holmes book series

Written by Andrew Lane and classified as YA, but I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone of any age. If you have not read it yet, read it now.

A behind the scenes view at the workings of the Mind Palace, the construction and the floor plans are being drawn up and you can read all about it. Brilliant read for Sherlockians or Holmesians.

This is kid Sherlock solving crimes and learning how to deduce, he stumbles often but manages to get back up again. This is way before he ever invented the tag of Consulting Detective.

Reincarnated as a dragon's egg

Light novel. Reminds me of Slime story.

Main character, former human, now a dragon's egg, evolution is his only hope for survival. A world full of hostiles all stronger than an egg, he soon becomes a baby dragon but his problems only multiply.

He wants to adopt a human appearance and to receive that skill, he chose an evil path of evolution. Now the humans he meets will hunt him down without mercy and he still can't change shape.

Light novel. Reincarnation.

Really like the reincarnation angle here, memories etched on the soul at the time of death. Ability to return to that physical and mental frame when needed. The perfect immortality.

The story is complex and interesting, multi faceted. Worth the read, try it out.

Bagjwi Sayug

Twilight retake, but I prefer this one to the original. The human has more spirit here.

Plus, they're both guys, Yaoi fangirl here. Slash, Boys love, homophobes beware.

The human is unusually disturbed, very manipulative and the vampire is naive, a bit helpless. The way they fall in love with each other and how they handle the complicated misunderstandings that arise as they learn more about each other is very addictive and charming.

Only problem is the snail speed updates. Whine, sob, groan.

Tales of demons and gods

What if Harry Potter had died at the final battle and woken up at Privet Drive as a baby? With all his memories intact.

Imagine a great hero, wise man of the world, seen and done everything possible, with a few regrets in his life, fatal tragedies he once did not have the power to prevent. Now kill that man and send his soul back in time, to when he was a child, barely able to fight. What happens next?

A correction of fate, but can fate be defied without a price to be paid? Are all lives equal or are some worth more to you? Who do you save, if you know disaster is approaching and you can save only a few of your people?

Vivid art and strong plot, and this is just the starting point. Waiting for more chapters, please hurry up.

Obaka chan Koigatariki Manga

Laugh riot, this one.

You are the rebel tomboy who beats up bullies for fun. You want to fall in love and live a normal girl's fairy tale life so you move schools and they put you in the delinquent class.

But wait, here is your prince and he's the school topper, no. 1 hot-ty and you want him so bad. Unfortunately, you can't change your spots that easily. Fortunately, he likes polka dots.

The romance here is rib tickling hilarious. Awesome hero is so quirky and does not mind being weaker than heroine, in fact it is a turn on for him. Heroine holds the show.

Love the fighting female, strong heroine, powerful female lead. So rare to find.

Has anime, must watch now. Toot toot. Correction, nope. Curses.

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko

Pray that your prayers are never answered. Beware of what you wish for.

Reminds me of this little series of horror books - Goosebumps. Really loved it as a kid.

This boy finds out about a cat statue that will take away something you don't want in exchange for a gift. He gives the belt he was wearing, to get rid of his cold composure and good behavior mask. Big mistake.

He becomes a hentai otaku and finds his belt has become the possession of a girl famous for a masterly shutdown to her many suitors. She has his old charm and he wants it back, at any price.

Hilarious, laugh riot, parts made me choke on air. Last time that happened was with Beelzebub manga. Wait, this has an anime? Yes !

Doulou Dalu

Reincarnation of a martial art expert into a world without martial arts.

Reminds me of Fenglin Tianxia. Nice manga, that one. She is a world class assassin who reincarnates into a world obsessed with martial arts in a weak and bullied female body.

Doulou Dalu is the tale of a slow built hero who creates a martial arts empire in a world of spiritual power and discrimination over spirits. The hero is charismatic, his adopted sister is rebelliously cute, he has harem style love interests and good looking rivals

Aside from those skin deep beauty details, this has plot twists and secrets that will punch you in the face. No SPOILERS, read this for yourself.

Nani mo Nai Kedo Sora wa Aoi Manga

Ignore the weird name, so long, this one is interesting.

Instead of a meteor crashing on earth and wiping all life, what if it emitted a gas that contained an iron eating alien bacteria? Does not sound too dire? Think again.

We live in a world dependent on iron, everything important to our way of life contains iron. Even our blood. Frightened yet?

Witch Workshop Manga

Webtoon, read from right to left. Like Arabic script.

There are three families that are linked by one curse. The family of witches that cast the curse, the family of nobles who suffer the curse and the family that guards the witches and the curse from untimely endings.

The young descendants are all keeping secrets from each other, with their own goals kept in priority in their minds, pretending friendship while plotting betrayal.

Gorgeous start for plot, fabulous artwork. Great expectations for this one, read it.

Bastard Manga

Creepy fantastic thriller of a manga.

There's a serial killer in my house, and he's my father, my only blood relative and sole caregiver. I'm an underage minor who helps him catch his victims. This is the only life style I can remember.

This girl shakes up my world and catches my father's eye. I want to give her up and I want to keep her alive. But I'm powerless against my father, weak, helpless. What do I do next?

Brilliant fast paced plot that reminds me of Death Note. Wow stuff.

Takane to Hana

Ridiculously hilarious. Ha, lol, rofl. Witch cackle until you go breathless.

Rich businessman with an unexpectedly childish side and a mature school girl romance. And it gets better. Girl power. She tugs him around by his tie and he likes it.

No more spoilers, because I insist you read it for yourself. Waiting for the drama or anime to be created right now, come on. Scream Quality and wait.

Shanlian de Sishen Manga

How do you build a super hero out of a fool? No answer? Try this one manga.

Lovable idiot, the boy is a pickpocket who is adopted by an evil alchemist with nefarious plans. Just before the alchemist undergoes a change of heart, an evil assassin kidnaps him to teach his martial arts.

The assassin dies after making the boy seek out his revenge as a deathbed promise. The boy begins his new life as a magician.

Brilliant and enchanting. This story has gorgeous art and plot that is fast paced. Love this.

Kiriwo Terrible

Japanese Hulk and Bruce Wayne. Who has a butler today? Aren't P.A's more in style?

The monster bears a close resemblance to the bat suit if Cat woman decided to wear it.

A hero is a villain if the property damage is worth many fortunes. No matter how many lives he spares, if he looks like a monster...

We judge a book by it's cover, always. Species dependent on sight. No one trusts our hero. And the villain is super hot.

The hero has a secret reason, the villain is a sociopath, the girl is torn between the two wondering who to trust.

Read this manga, it's better than I have made it sound. Really.

CHIHOU KISHI HANS NO JUNAN Manga

Pretty fun and told from reverse perspective of foreign world inhabitant as he watches world travelers from Japan land in his world and gain powerful abilities. Also features reincarnation. And game control mode life.

Hans is a simple cool soldier, with a very interesting and powerful past. Everyone tires of endless battle and seeks solitude, even the greatest knight of the world. Hint.

The intruders are very friendly and helpful, which is very lucky for Hans, he concludes this is a feature of the world that they are from. The list of people also includes a sniper. Hans has no idea what that means, his world is still stuck in the time of sword fighting.

I like this innovative plot idea and expect to see more cleverness from this story.

Autophagy Regulation

Bleach meets Code Geass. Well, the eye part of Geass.

So, the key to the world of supernatural elements hidden from normal humans falls into the hands of an ordinary cop, correction into his eyeball. He can see what no other human can see and can't get rid of his sight.

 xxxHolic style, he is made a lackey to a strange shopkeeper and he gets thoroughly involved in a world where he has no power.

The eyeball has power. The cop has no idea.

I N V U Manga

Written by the same author who wrote Queen's Knight Manga - Kim Kang Won.

I like this manga better even though the themes are similar. Gender bending. Cross dressing.

The strict control society opinion enforces on standards of dressing for men and women. What makes clothing feminine or masculine, when clothing is an enforced standard itself.

After a car accident kills her beloved brother Terry, Halli's mom goes insane. She refuses to believe Terry is dead and calls Halli by her dead son's name. Halli goes along with the charade to keep her mother's sanity. Terry 2.0 is born.

Enter Sey, with her unsuitable mother who ditches her to Terry's unwelcoming company and Terry's mom who coddles her as her own daughter. Expect fireworks as they both compete for the love of Hajun and Terry's mom.

Evil Queen's Holiday

When things go wrong, they go wrong spectacularly. When it rains, it floods.

This Evil Queen lives in a red castle in a forest and pretty much lives quietly. Not really evil but amoral. But who cares about definition when they don't even know she exists.

One day, she follows her human subordinate and discovers he has a girlfriend. She takes the advice of a succubus and meets a half elf. She kidnaps the half elf. What, she's never met one before.

Fortunately for our story, the half elf is subordinate to the red lady and she does not let go of her property that easily. Very similar for opponents they are, red lady and evil queen.

The red lady and her female subordinate attack the castle. They succeed despite the hundreds of guards, rescue the half elf and steal an enemy - the second in command of the army. They do this with the help of the human subordinate and the succubus.

And this is just the beginning of the story, of course the evil queen swears revenge and chases after them.

Gosu Manga

He reminds me of One Punch Man and Ranma 1/2.

What do you do when your goals are met? All your goals. Do you retire?
What do you do when you can't get revenge because your enemies are all dead?
You're just twenty years old and all your life goals have been fulfilled by accident.

The hero spent his youth locked in a cave learning martial art secrets from his insane master who spends most of his time repeating the tale of his betrayal by his most trusted allies. The hero leaves the cave when his master dies and seeks the four traitors. The dumpling seller informs him that they killed each other fighting for the chieftain spot. Climax goes like air escaping a balloon with a very rude sound. No big bad to defeat, no ultimate battle to end the war.

I love the unexpected and this is so far off script, where will this story go next?

Hongdo Manga

Webtoon, actually. Never mind, call it a comic or a graphic novel. A rose by any other name.

The artwork is quirky and the plot is hot. The main protagonist is interesting. The world this is based in is full of surprises. In this world, humans, foxes, goblins, ghosts and sorcerers live side by side. And fight for every bit of life they can snatch away from the others.

Just take a look at this pic, does it not just whet your appetite? Does it not strike a match to your curiosity? Burn in the flames of your own imagination.

Vampire Game

I adore this manga. I must have read it at least ten times. Or is it closer to twenty? Never mind.

There is this evil vampire king who is bored. Duzzell. He starts a war with the human race. There is this human king who defeats him using an unusual spell. Phelios. The spell will kill your enemy at the price of your own life. Equal exchange.

The vampire king swears revenge and curses them both to reincarnation. Until death do us apart, or until we wake to life again. The vampire king is more than a little obsessed with the human king.

Unfortunately for him, the vampire king wakes up in a world where the family of the human king has expanded beyond count. As a wild cat's baby kitten. Finding the reincarnate of his old enemy is going to be near impossible. He needs the taste of blood to identify the true reincarnate.

Luckily, one of the descendants of the human king is very crazy. Ishtar. I hate my ancestor, I'll help you find his reincarnation and I'll let you kill him, just be my friend and stay by my side.

The hunt begins and the girl gets them into more trouble along the way. She's engaged to be married on basis of a bet. She's in love with her bodyguard but will never admit it first. Her tutor's suspicious of Duzzell, cute kitten looks not working.

Good thing that Duzzell can shape-shift into her body and pretend to be her, right? Wrong.

This is a hilarious read and it had me hurting with how hard I laughed. The vampire king is no match for the human princess and he gets in such shenanigans with her that he almost forgets about his ultimate goal. Read it.

Fujimi orchestra

This might be in the wrong blog, ( do check out my other blog for T.V ) but unless you get the whole picture, you won't see the romance. The beginning is a bit violent. The novels are the original source.

Set of novels but no English translation available, teeth grind. Anime and manga exist but the live action movie is truly gorgeous. Fan summaries of novels, but we all know that's not the same as reading the actual book yourself. The details and nuances all lost.

Boys Love and Rape elements, warning. Extra warning for rape. I'm not a fan of rape or romances that start with rape, but the live action drama paints a beautiful tale of obsession, misunderstandings and frienemies who envy your lot while you suffer.

If you fast forward the rape scene and keep in mind this is fiction, I'm not downplaying reality of what rape victims suffer. Maybe this is a bad romance and maybe a love story too. Do all love stories have to have happy endings or beginnings or middles? To be happy all the time? Where is the conflict and drama?

The rapist fears losing his victim and forces a connection - the rape. The victim forgives him for the sake of the orchestra they lead together and over time, understands and grows to love him. Maybe they are two unstable people finding stability together, because both their lives seem hollow before they met. Illusion like and fleeting as well.

I don't know how to describe this adequately. Try it out for yourself and see what taste is left behind.
But be warned and be prepared.

Seigi no Mikata

Hilarious, rib tickler comedy. I know a girl just like her. Don't we all ?

She's a devil with god's own luck. The people around her worship her even as she slaughters their jobs, reputations, family life and health. She's a monster pretending to be a saint.

And then the devil gets married and her sister sighs a huge sigh of relief and throws a party. And then the devil starts visiting her old home every time her husband is out of town.

Imagine a bully who is praised for every insult because her luck always turns in her favor. Imagine that bully is your sister and you are her favorite target.

They call her an ally of Justice. Blind Justice.

Oh my god, this is a drama. Watching now. Still prefer the manga version, I don't think the actress playing the older sister is beautiful enough for the role, but that's just me.

Hell's Kitchen Manga

Crazy story, cooking and demons.

This demon, the Earl of Poor Eating, named Dogma, is hungry for souls. Souls of world class chefs. But when they get that title, their souls are sour and bitter with arrogance and greed. Dogma is not pleased so he hatches the perfect plan, raise a chef himself.

Pick a soul, a good one, already flavored with ideals and contentment and then make that soul a chef without spoiling the original qualities. Easy, right?

The soul Dogma picks does not know how to cook and has no intention of being eaten.

Reminds me of Demon Detective Neuro and Black Butler and Nobunaga's Chef. Which is a brilliant start to a promising story, hitting all the high points. And the recipes and cooking techniques are real, not like in Gourmet Hunter Toriko, which was a very weird read.

Saike Mata Shite mo Manga

This made me cry. Equal exchange, life for a life, fate that can not be averted with any other price.

I remembered xxxHolic while reading this. Everything for a price, but do you know what the true value is? In pain and suffering? Are you really willing to pay that much and for what?

This kid is unremarkable, ordinary and worse of all, he's lying to himself. Yup, he's content with his life, content with doing nothing and being nobody.

Until one day, his best friend dies and he kills himself, only to wake up in his own bed to find time has reversed itself. He thanks God for his second chance and does everything in his power to save his best friend.

Nothing works and he wake up again and again after committing suicide just to watch his best friend die in front of his eyes. Until he realizes what he must do. Die in her place.

Shuumatsu no Tenki

Reminds me of Death Note, but with not so many rules.

Loser protagonist who finds it difficult to fit into society gets a gift/curse, he says the word bang and points with right index finger, the person he points at is sucked into a black hole.

First he has fun with it, experimenting and getting rid of his enemies. No evidence because no body.
Then the accidents start to happen. Bang is part of many words and sentences and pointing is natural.

Try it out, do you want this super power? Sounds like Midas Touch to me.

Abide in the Wind

World of magic as science. Suspend your disbelief willingly, this is worth the effort.

They call them colossal birds that rule the skies, we call them dragons.

The last dragon alive is being hunted. Still immature, with a guide, a human girl finds them. Accepting her as a suitable vessel for the Dragon Pearl, the guide tricks her into sacrificing her life to guard him and his immature charge.

Unfortunately for the guide, the dragon child has other plans for the human girl. Yup, this is a romance but it is packed full with action.

Delicious artwork with beautiful color, strong plot. Read it.

Black Haze

Hilarious, lol . World of magic, different levels of power. Very creepy backstory. Who created Magic, is it gift or curse?

Little kid is the best magician in the organization. When he awakens, he is a young man. Really handsome, tall and dark. He's got fans and obsessive stalkers. He's even got an arch enemy who is obsessed with him.

As his normal shape and size, he is lonely, so his guardian enrolls him in a magic school for a mission, protect a noble son from his bullies and fix the problem.

Well, you think you've seen it all, just by looking at the story from the top, but you're forgetting the undercurrents. Twisty, twisty story here, will smash all your expectations to dust.

Warnings for violence and head banging plot.

The Dragon next door

Exactly like the title says.

So this kid finally gets his own place and buys rice cake to give his neighbor. A house warming tradition. He walks in the unlocked house and sees a dragon playing video games.

The dragon is a bestselling author of a fantasy series depicting a friend of a friend's real life story.

Love the scene where the dragon tries to ignore any mention of his deadline. I totally understand it.

He's a dragon and so is his sister and their mother. His sister meets the son of her mother's old friend and sparks, fire, misunderstandings happen. L O V E or what do dragons call it - hell fire.

Funny, and cheerful, lighthearted story.

DICE The cube that changes everything

O.K, this is a creepy, frightening look at society. Think Lord of the Flies but worse.

If you could gamble to improve your looks, your skills, your very being and self, would you? No matter the risks to yourself or to others? How willing are you to demonize yourself?

Would you do it if everyone else around you is? Would you justify your own behavior? Would you forget your own moral code?

 Or because society imposes morals, we create a moral code in accordance, if we were left with no supervision, we would all be free to be the monsters we always have been in our thoughts.

Humans are creepy fascinating. All that we can be, for good or bad.

Read this manga, it will give you nightmares and keep you up afterwards, wondering.

Lookism

Crazy manga this one. Exactly what I like.

Hero is overweight and bullied relentlessly. Life is shit until he finds another body to occupy. Nope, this is not reincarnation. This is two bodies and one soul that hops in between.

The trick is sleep, you fall asleep in one and wake up in the other. If you wake up the sleeping body, the awake body falls asleep.

Vicious humor, ripping the blinds off your eyes, society at it's disgusting worse, where appearances matter because majority of humans are sighted and judge using solely that sense.

My Shiny World

Fascinating plot. Lovely art.

This girl can see evil intent as dark shadows covering human bodies. All is well until her mother betrays her. Then she stops trusting people and making friends.

Now she meets a strange guy and her life begins to change. He's rude but kind at heart.

Kind of reminds me of Sensory Couple and I hear your voice. Both very good dramas.

KONJIKI NO MOJI TSUKAI - YUUSHA YONIN NI MAKIKOMARETA UNIQUE CHEAT Manga

Not the Shield Hero story but a similar one. Alternate world travel and become a hero story.

Light novel translation is complete while manga is incomplete. I read the novels.

Story is solid here. Takes time to develop but you end up rooting for Hiro, the Innocent Bystander, not the other four heroes. He's real, with actual feelings and he works hard and he is no fool.

I'll be honest, the story style is unusual, so you might find it difficult to get used to it, but the plot is good. Give it a try.

Demon Detective Neuro

Two versions, manga and anime, but I prefer the manga. The plot lines diverge so try to do both.

Neuro is a demon who eats mysteries. Special puzzles that are created from the darkness that resides in souls. When he feasts, the criminal's soul is utterly shattered, all willpower disappears and he confesses freely.

In Black Butler, Sebastian is a crow and Claude is a spider. Neuro is a purple hyacinth macaw. Mind blink.

Neuro uses a high school girl as his cover, pretends she's the master detective and he's her pupil, this is semi funny because he's a sadistic master and she's his play toy/slave/puppet, all done as a joke, o.k, I never really got that part, felt it was unnecessary for the story. Bonding or toughening exercise?

The puzzles get more mind bending and bloody as we go further into the story, where the meat cooks over a slow flame, and then we meet X of the red box, very creepy serial killer who becomes obsessed with Neuro and brings him closer to his demonic death.

Qualia the Purple

I read this first as a manga and it made me cry. No lie. There is a light novel series as well.

Gorgeous, gorgeous plot, characters that steal your heart and make you feel.

I always felt there was a hint of girls love, but there is no proof. Never mind.

There is this girl Yukari who thinks people are robots, because her eyes see robots when she looks at people. Along with this strange curse is an equally strange gift - She can repair robots to brand new condition even if they are in pieces.

Another girl Gaku befriends her and almost dies in an accident. Luckily Yukari repairs her with her cellphone and saves her life. This is not the first time Yukari has used her powers and a shadowy organization full of people with abilities contacts her with an offer of training.

Yukari dies in mysterious circumstances and Gaku goes mad. She burns the world in search of answers and discovers she can call up her alternate selves and transfer knowledge.

Sayonara Sorcier

What sells is what moves the heart.

Van Gogh is the name of the main character and his aim is to break down the traditional art world and create a revolution of art. His older brother's name is Vincent.

Gorgeous art and fascinating story. Read it.

The Devil King is bored.

Rib tickling comedy, I laughed so loud and long once, I almost suffocated.

Cruel is the Devil King and all powerful, do not anger him. Illogical are his moods and his temperament is volatile.

And he is very, very, very bored. You are his entertainment. Danger.

UCHI NO MAOU KAMIMASEN YO Manga

This is a hilarious, semi mocking tale. Wow.

In a world where you can adopt unusual pets, a family has adopted Satan, Demon Lord. Yup. The final boss, the last obstacle to victory, the darkest hour before dawn.

The pet is everything you think it would be, fond of sweets, protective of it's owners, scared of ... but even as a pet, it is Satan. Picking fights with the Hero pet, launching fireballs, being as evil as the Demon Lord is supposed to be.

Worth the read, check it out.

RPG Manhua

Note the Manhua tag, smile.

O.k artwork but interesting story. Game world exits hero, disillusioned with his friendships. Two years later he returns to universal bad mouthing, his abrupt exit locked the Eastern Continent when he took the only key out of the game.

He forms a new team with girl sword master and boy blacksmith. They fix the flying ship and sail to the locked zone. One hitchhiker hanging from a rope. An old teammate of the hero.

Count D's Petshop

Creepy, haunting tales of dark desires and the price you must pay to fulfill them.

Count D owns a pet shop, full of rare, exotic beasts. No simple pet cat or dog here. But beware, all customers end up satisfied or dead. Is it murder? Or is it a curse?

The detective Leon Orcot thinks Count D is a criminal. Without proof, he cannot make an arrest. So he hangs around the place and gets more involved in the shady business than he ever wanted to.

The writer has a beautifully twisted mind and all her works have a touch of the supernatural, otherworldly poetry to them. Her name is Akino Matsuri and you should read her work.

Hana wa Nisemono

This is so sad. A happy gay couple visit a shrine and make a wish, to stay together forever.

The next morning, one of the boys is a girl. Now they can marry and have kids and live openly. No one else remembers her being a boy. But her boyfriend says " Why are you a girl? "

He no longer desires her. And she begins to dislike his coldness. They were happy and in love, even if they were in hiding. Now, they avoid each other.

A lot of countries pretend gay people don't exist. They call it a disease with need for a torture cure.

If the solution was so simple, if sexuality was a choice, don't you think people would have chosen safety first? You don't choose the body you get, the family you are born in, the sexuality encoded in your DNA. No choice.

God created us all, exactly as we are. If we are flawed, what do you call the Creator? We are not mistakes. Excuse the rant. I feel strongly about stupidity.

SPOILER - Punch in the face ending. 

Lucky Dog 1 Blast

Typical jail break with atypical hero.

He's got the luck of the devil himself and now he has a cause to wield it. Mafia small fry until disaster strikes his gang and imprisons four leaders inside the same prison he regularly jailbreaks out for fun.

Orders come from above, get them out and become their boss and new leader of the entire mafia family. What a heady offer for a young trickster.

Really pretty boys for a mafia gang but no one is complaining, plot is strong. Read it. Hell, this is based on a game? Wow, nice.

The Gamer

Manga. what a story you weave! I like.

In this world, there are powered people and normal people. You can evolve. or devolve.

One day, a boy wakes to find his love of games has translated to real life, making his real world a game world. Everyone has power levels and unique titles.
